In the pursuit of improving connections with Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, a former Union Minister, has been appointed as India's new High Commissioner to Bangladesh. The 75-year-old Dinesh Trivedi is set to begin his role soon. He will take over from Pranay Verma, who has been appointed as India's next ambassador to Belgium and the European Union. This appointment is happening at a moment when both nations are working on mending their relationship, which suffered during the temporary government led by Muhammad Yunus after Sheikh Hasina’s government fell in August 2024. Diplomatic relations took another shift for the better when a new government headed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took charge earlier this year. Dinesh Trivedi previously held the position of Railway Minister from 2011 to 2012, and he served as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare from 2009 to 2011 in former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's cabinet. He was a Lok Sabha MP from 2009 to 2019, representing the Barrackpore district as part of the All India Trinamool Congress before switching to the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021. He earned an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin and is also a licensed pilot who once had his own air cargo business.

Pranay Verma, the former Indian High Commissioner, significantly contributed to the efforts of re-establishing bilateral relations. Recently, both countries have increased high-level interactions, including a visit from Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman to New Delhi. During this visit, Khalilur Rahman met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, where they discussed enhancing cooperation in trade, energy, and interactions between people. He also had a meeting with Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri in New Delhi to talk about improving energy relations between the two countries.
