Google Funds 6 AI- based Research Projects in India

A six Artificial Intelligence (AI) based research projects have been started by Google in India which is said to be focusing on addressing the social, humanitarian and the environmental changes in various sectors which include health care, education, disaster prevention and conversation.

The company has said in a statement that, funding and computational resources will be provided by Google Research India to each team, in addition to supporting the efforts with the expertise in the computer vision, natural language processing and other deep learning techniques.

Manish Gupta who is the Director of the Google Research Team of India has said that it is being observed that several people are applying Artificial intelligence in order to address big challenges and therefore the research in Artificial Intelligence for the Social Good which is said to be one of the key focus areas of Google Research India.

The six projects include improving the health information for high HIV/AIDS risk communities from team from IIT Delhi that is led by Tavpritesh Sethi which is a team from Singapore Management University that is led by Pradeep Varakantham and non profit Swasti.

The other project is the usage of Artificial Intelligence in order to predict the risk of expectant mothers dropping out of health care programmes which is done by the researchers from the IIT Madras that is led by Balaraman Ravindran and a non profit Armman. This project is being done to improve the targeted interventions and also to increase positive health care outcomes for the mothers and their infants.

The team led by Arunesh Sinha and non profit Khushibaby, from the Singapore Management University is said to apply Artificial Intelligence in order to help ensure the consistency in the capturing and monitoring of the health care information.

Another team led by Pradeep Varakantham along with non profit Wildlife Conservation Trust, from the Singapore Management University will be using Artificial Intelligence to predict the conflict between the humans and wildlife in the state of Maharashtra which would in turn help inform the data- driven policy making.

The team Nanyang Technology University which is led by Bo An and non profit Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and The Environment is said to apply Artificial Intelligence in order to inform dam and barrage water releases which would help in building early warning systems which would minimize the risk of disasters.

The last team in the six projects include the team from AI4Bharat and IIT Madras which is led by Mitesh Khapra and Pratyush Kumar along with non profit Storyweaver is said to build an open source input tools for the undeserved languages of India to accelerate the publishing of the content that is openly licensed.

Milind Tambe who is the director of AI for Social Good of the Google Research Team in India has said that they have been looking forward to extend their support to their academic researchers, organizations and the broader community over the months and years in the future to start the projects.
